Sergio Rodrigues

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Rodrigues died in the same city in 2014, the year he celebrated six decades of continuous activity in furniture design having developed more than 1,200 projects. After graduating from the Faculdade Nacional de Arquitetura, he moved to Curitiba and assisted the Hauner brothers in opening Móveis Artesanal Paranaense. Although it received a lot of attention, the store wasn’t a success. He returned to Rio de Janeiro and in 1955 started OCA, one of the most influential modern furniture companies in Brazil. He liked to use solid wood, especially jacaranda, and combined it with leather, fabrics, cane and metal. His iconic Mole armchair designed in 1957 was an immediate success, comprised of jacaranda structure and a bulky cushion thrown over adjustable leather straps. His furniture was widely used in the new public building in Brasilia according to the request of Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa.

セルジオ・ロドリゲスは、1927年にブラジル・リオデジャネイロで生まれ、家具デザインを手がけて60年の節目となった2014年に同市でその生涯を終えます。

1200ものデザインを起こし、その半分は実際に生産されたと言われています。

ロドリゲスは、1952年の大学卒業後、クリチバに移り、カルロ・ハウナーらとともに家具事業をスタート。1955年にリオデジャネイロに戻り、量販家具メーカーの「Oca」を設立しました。

彼は、無垢材、特にジャカランダを好んで用い、それに皮革や布地、籐、金属など、違う素材を組み合わせたデザインを数多く生み出しました。中でも、ジャカランダのフレームにボリュームあるクッションを組み合わせた「Mole」アームチェアは、代表的な作品です。 オスカー・ニーマイヤーとルシオ・コスタの依頼により、1960年に落成し、のちに世界遺産に登録されたブラジリアの多くの政府庁舎に、ロドリゲスの家具が納められました。今日に至るまで、彼のデザインは、首都ブラジリアのアイデンティティに欠かせない存在です。
