Jorge Zalszupin

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Poland, in 1922, at the age of 15 he felt irresistibly attracted to a book Jorge Zalszupin saw through a bookstore window. Opening the book’s jute cover – where Le Corbusier’s initials, LC, were printed in small, golden letters – Zalszuspin was hopelessly taken with architecture. He studied during the war and, when he graduated, in 1945, he felt so disillusioned with the devastation he saw in his hometown that he decided he would leave to look for other lands. After a spell in France, he moved to Brazil, where he encountered the right conditions to develop his unique, poetical, sensual and modern brand of architecture. He worked designing homes for the country’s elite and also began to design furniture for his own projects, since the market did not have enough options suited to the new architecture of that time. In 1959, he opened his brand, L’Atelier, a design collective comprised of architects, engineers, craftsmen and a full-scale team of professionals that did everything from researching materials to the finalizing the product, there his comfortable and timeless furniture was produced. His elegant design was strongly influenced not only by Nordic design, but also by the creative atmosphere in Brazil in 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s, his work could be seen in pretty much every public building in Brasília.

1922年、ポーランドのワルシャワに生まれたジョルジ・ザウズピン。15歳のときに、書店の窓から見えたある本に強く惹きつけられます。ル・コルビュジエのイニシャル「LC」と金色の文字で小さく書かれたそのジュートの表紙を開いた彼は、すっかり建築に心を奪われたのでした。

1945年に学業を終了したザウズピンは、故郷の惨状に目にし、新天地を求めて国を去ることを決意します。そして、フランスで数年間過ごしたのちに、ブラジルへ移ります。自身の独創的で詩的、繊細かつモダンな建築をさらに発展させるのに最適な土地だと確信したのです。

間も無く、富裕層向けの住宅の設計を始め、合わせて家具も手がけるようになります。当時、市場には、新しい建築に見合った家具というのはほとんどありませんでした。1959年に「L’Atelier」を立ち上げ、そこで彼の快適でありながら普遍的なデザインの家具は生産されました。「L’Atelier」は、建築家やエンジニア、職人からなるプロフェッショナルたちの集まりで、素材の選定から製品の完成に至るまで全ての行程がそこで行われました。彼のエレガントなデザインには、北欧デザインだけでなく、1950年代ブラジルの創造性豊かな環境の影響も多く見られます。1960、1970年代には、彼の作品がブラジリアの多くの官庁へ納められ、今日でもその家具は現役で活躍しています。
