BIOGRAPHY

“I’m not an architect; I’m not an engineer – I’m a factory man.” A well-known words that Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) proclaimed himself. As he said, he was just a factory man who had no qualification of an architect or an engineer. He was born as the first child to an artist of École de Nancy as his father and a pianist as his mother, brought up in Nancy and trained as a metal smith. Opening his first workshop in Nancy in 1923, he started to make metal joinery. He came to lead the modernism movement before long by the encounter with the most progressive architects and designers in the same age and the development the new materials such as steel and aluminum and the production techniques different from a conventional techniques. The Prouvé works that were originally designed for the general public, more than half a century, still attract us with its creative beauty.

「私は建築家でもなく、エンジニアでもない、工員なのだ。」ジャン・プルーヴェ（1901-1984）が自らのことを称したことばとしてよく知られていますが、このことばの通り、プルーヴェは資格としては建築家でもエンジニアでもなく、ただの工員でした。エコール・ド・ナンシーの芸術家の父とピアニストの母の間に生まれたプルーヴェは、ナンシーで育ち、10代の頃から金工職人として修行を始め、1923年に最初の工房を立ち上げると、鋳鉄製品をつくり始めます。やがて、同じ時代のもっとも先進的な建築家たちと出会い、そしてスチールやアルミニウムといった新しい素材や従来とは異なる製造技法の開発を重ね、自らがモダニズムを牽引するようになります。もともと大衆向けにデザインされたプルーヴェの作品は、半世紀以上経った今なお、その独創的な美しさで私たちを魅了し続けています。
