Oscar Niemeyer

BIOGRAPHY

A world architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) created a number of dynamic architectural and furniture works with organic curved designs, which would considered as masterpieces. Well-known for working with Le Corbusier for the design of United Nations building in New York City but one of his greatest examples must be the design of the new capital city Brasília. In 1950’s he designed main government buildings in Brasília as a big national project and created the unique and creative urban city from a deserted land. Brasília was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. It is very rare that modern cities within 40 years of construction are registered as the World Heritage sites.

He started developing furniture projects in collaboration with his daughter Ana Maria in 1960’s. The first piece designed by Oscar and Ana was ‘Alta Lounge Chair‘, and it was Tendo Mokko that undertook the manufacture to realize the furniture that fit his architectures. Tendo Mokko formed the beautifully curved furniture with their traditional woodwork technology at their factory in Brazil. The furniture series that were set up in the central government offices in Brazil has still been used by the government officials today.

言わずと知れた世界的建築家のオスカー・ニーマイヤー（1907-2012）。曲線を用いたダイナミックな作品の数々をこの世に生み出しました。1947年、ル・コルビュジエとともにニューヨーク国連本部ビルの設計に携わったことで知られますが、彼の残した最大の偉業は何と言ってもブラジルの首都ブラジリアの設計と言えるでしょう。1950年代の国家の一大プロジェクトであるブラジリアの主要建築物を設計、荒涼とした地に創造性あふれる都市を創り上げました。1987年にブラジリアは、ユネスコ世界遺産に登録。建設から40年未満の近代的都市が登録されることは極めて稀なことです。

ニーマイヤーが家具デザインを手がけたのはやや遅く、最初の作品は1971年に自身の娘であるアナ・マリア（Anna Maria）と共同でデザインした「アルタ・アームチェア」でした。彼の建築にふさわしい家具を具現化する担い手として製作を請け負ったのは天童木工。ブラジルに工場を置き、伝統の木工技術で美しい曲線の家具を形にし、ブラジルの中枢に納品された家具は現在でもブラジルの要人たちを支えています。
